Becoming a priest was the last thing on Father Carlos Martins radar as a young man. While being raised in a Catholic family, he abandoned the faith in his youth and became a “practical atheist.”
Now he is a priest with a powerful ministry. He leads “Treasures of the Church,” a ministry of evangelization and healing, which tours with hundreds of relics to locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“Of all the things I do as a priest – this ministry is my favorite. I get to give people an experience of the living God like they have never experienced before,” he said.
In 2023 Fr. Martins was asked by the Holy See to conduct a tour exclusively with the arm of St. Jude the Apostle. In the Worcester Diocese, the relic was hosted at Sacred Heart Parish in Webster when Father Adam R. Reid was pastor in November 2023.
After several years of development, last year Father Martins announced the release of “The Exorcist Files,” an audio docudrama podcast about his experiences as an exorcist that include education on Church teachings. The podcast is in its second season of broadcast. Father has explained how he used relics in his exorcisms. In one instance he used a relic of the bloody cloak of St. Thomas Becket to help drive a demon out of a man; this demon was the one who stirred up the King’s knights to kill the saint.
While many people shy away from the topic of exorcism – understandably so – “The Exorcist Files” is not intended to sensationalize or terrify like a Hollywood production. Each episode breaks down one person’s encounter: how the force was invited or introduced, how the person sought help, and how the person was delivered from their torment. Along the way Father includes lessons from the Bible and teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Father Martins will be giving two talks at this year’s Worcester Catholic Women’s Conference. In the first talk, “False Gods and Spiritual Warfare,” he will speak about ways we break the first commandment. And in the second talk, “Relics of the Saints,” he will talk about the importance of relics in our faith and how he uses them in his ministries.
Also speaking at the conference will be Pamela Acker, Ester Munt-Brooks and Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary sisters, Sister Marie Bernard Maney and Sister Katherine Maria Mueller. In addition to the speakers’ program, the sacrament of reconciliation will be available during the lunch break. The conference will begin with adoration and the rosary led by Bishop McManus who will also celebrate Mass at 5 p.m. in the St. Joseph Basilica.
The conference will be held at St. Joseph School in Webster on Oct. 5. Tickets are $50 and include continental breakfast and lunch. Ticket prices increase to $60 after September 25th.
