In the twenty years since the installation of Bishop McManus as the fifth bishop of Worcester, the diocese has changed demographically and structurally for numerous reasons, but one thing remains a constant for the people of the Catholic Church in the diocese – that is, faith in Jesus Christ.
From the sexual abuse crisis to COVID-19, and school mergers to pastoral planning, challenges were apparent for the bishop and the diocese, but hope was expressed for the spiritual life of the Church, in particular because of vocations, the sacraments and faithful Catholics who partake of them, as well as the influx of different ethnic communities.
Bishop McManus sat down with The Catholic Free Press to discuss some of these changes and the reasons why as well as to explain his mission as ordinary of the diocese, tasked with the responsibility of leading the people and defending the faith.
For Bishop McManus, keeping Christ the splendor of truth at the center of his life and leadership helped to make and inspire decisions in the Diocese of Worcester.
