Sister Margaret Ann Brown, R.S.M. (also known as Sister Mary Anthony) a Sister of Mercy for 77 years, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Dec. 15 at McAuley Healthcare Center in Watchung, New Jersey. She was born on March 3, 1926 in Shelburne Falls, the daughter of Richard A. Brown, of Portland, Maine, and Ruth Owen Brown, of Brunswick, Maine.
She attended elementary school in Crittenden, Maine, before moving to St. Joseph Parish in Shelburne Falls, and then to Worcester, where she graduated from Ascension High School. She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Leicester on Feb. 2, 1945, professed first vows on July 1, 1947, and made her final profession of vows on July 1, 1950.
Sister Margaret Ann received a bachelor’s degree in education from Anna Maria College in 1957, and a master of education degree from Worcester State University in 1961.
She worked with children at McAuley Nazareth Home in Leicester; St. Aloysius School in Gilbertville; Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart schools in Worcester; St. Patrick School in Largo, Florida, and Immaculate Heart School in Santa Ana, California. She instilled in her students a love of education and a deep sense of gratitude for the gifts of God’s love and mercy, and a spirit of joy, which personified her life.
Her funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 28 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester, with a visitation in the church from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. After Mass, the Sisters, Mercy Associates and relatives and friends are to travel in procession to Saint Joseph Cemetery in Leicester, where Sister Margaret Ann is to be buried in the Sisters of Mercy section.
