MARLBOROUGH – The Sisters of the Assumption mourn the loss of Sister Lucille Yvette Roy, formerly known as Sister Normand-Marie, who died peacefully at Marie Esther Health Center on Monday, Sept. 6. She was born on June 17, 1939, in Worcester, the second of five children of Normand Roy and Helen (Jette) Roy.
Sister Lucille joined the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sept. 24, 1959. Soon after her profession, she taught junior high in Salem, Brockton, Southbridge and Chicopee Falls, and Hudson Falls, New York and Barton, Vermont. In 1973, she became a missionary in Brazil where she worked tirelessly with women in the villages, taught English as a second language and managed a school of faith. After five years of hard work, her health began to decline significantly. As a result, Sister Lucille was forced to return to our Mother House in Nicolet, Canada, where she received wonderful care which allowed her to regain her strength.
After earning a degree in library sciences, she worked as the head librarian at the school library for 14 years.
In 1991, she returned to the United States to become principal of St. George School in Chicopee Falls and later principal of Trinity Catholic Academy in Southbridge. After a sabbatical, Sister Lucille worked in the development office of Holy Name High School. For the past three years, she had been engaged in a ministry of prayer which fulfilled a deep desire.
Sister Lucille is survived by her sisters Pauline and Janet, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as the Sisters of the Assumption worldwide. Her brother Ronald and her sister Elaine predeceased her.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at the Marie Esther Health Center in Marlborough. Burial will be private in East St. Cemetery, Petersham.
A calling hour will be held in the chapel from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to Mass.
