Youngsters arriving at St. Mary’s Elementary School on Richland Street were greeted Tuesday morning by a sidewalk covered with graffiti.
The graffiti, in chalk, was done in a variety of colors.
And it was put there by the St. Mary’s teachers.
Vandalism? Not even close. It was a big, colorful welcome for the youngsters on their first day of classes in the new school year.
Adam Cormier, president of St. Mary’s and principal of the high school, said that the youngsters and their parents read the messages as they arrived.
“They loved it,” he said.
In the middle of Richland Street, in big yellow block letters, was the word “FUN.” Above it was a big yellow arrow pointing to the front door of the elementary school as well as to the word “WELCOME,” also in big block letters
in purple at the curb. Those were done by Philip McGaw, art teacher, whose shirt was the same purple color as the chalk he used to print “WELCOME.”
There were more than two dozen messages. One, near the front door, read “Let’s go Eagles,” another said “St. Mary’s rules.” “Class 2019” said one message, followed by the first names of the members of that class. Another said “St. Mary’s has heart,” with a drawing of a heart between the first two and last two words. There were welcomes to the 7th Grade, the 5th Grade and even a simple letter “K” for the kindergarten. One welcomed “Our Students.” Another welcomed the faculty.
“Smile, you’re in the 4th Grade,” said one message. Another said, “Welcome Grade 1. I’m excited to meet you. Miss Seger.”
“It’s gonna be a great year. Welcome back,” was the message signed by Mrs. Lorusso and Mrs. Monick. Vice principal Monica Campbell was photographed writing “WOW, School is Cool,” in blue block letters.
“Let’s have a great year,” said one message. “Have a great new year,” said another. “Be bright,” said still another. “You are loved,” Grow with faith and knowledge,” “Make history,” Let’s grow and glow,” were among other messages.
Mr. Cormier said the effort by the teahers was a team building project which sent positive notes to the students and welcomed them back.
