Beginning Feb. 28, parents can decide whether or not their children wear masks to school, barring any standing directives from local boards of health, according to a letter to pastors and principals Thursday from diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools David Perda.
“As you are likely aware, the Department of Elementary Education (DESE) announced yesterday (Wednesday) its intention of lifting the statewide mandate requiring masks in schools. Masks will be a personal choice beginning on February 28 with a recommendation that the non-vaccinated continue to wear them but with masking ultimately being a personal decision,” Superintendent Perda said.
The decision to make masks a personal choice in the Diocese of Worcester was made in consultation with Bishop McManus, he said. They recommended that schools abide by the state guidance. However, the superintendent continued, “there may still be some exceptions such as directives from local boards of health or individual pastor decisions.”
He said, “Hopefully, the pandemic is nearing its end. Thank you for continued efforts to provide families with an excellent Catholic education during this challenging period.”
