SHREWSBURY – St. John’s High School has announced that Headmaster Alex Zequeira will be leaving the school in one year. The press release said he announced his departure in a meeting with faculty and staff and in a community-wide communication. He will leave at the end of the next school year in June 2024. Under Zequeira’s leadership, St. John’s implemented new academic programs and spaces, renovated and expanded campus facilities, kept the school open during the COVID-19 pandemic, opened the Brother Robert Treanor, CFX Middle School Division, and published "Purpose, People, and Preparation: A Strategic Plan for Saint John’s High School 2023-2028." Zequeira began at St. John’s in 2016 after serving five years as the president of Nativity School of Worcester, a school he helped found in 2003 where he served as principal. Reflecting on his time at St. John’s, Zequeira expressed his gratitude, saying, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the headmaster of Saint John’s High School for the past seven years. The unparalleled commitment of our exceptional faculty, staff, and students, combined with the support of our families and alumni, has been instrumental in creating an environment where young men thrive. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to the final thirteen months of my time at the school continuing to focus on the growth and strategic vision set forth by our community. I have no doubt that the future holds even greater achievements for this remarkable institution.” Christopher Creed, chairman of the board of trustees and a St. John’s alumnus from the class of 1996, praised Zequeira’s transformative leadership. Creed stated, “We are fortunate and grateful to have had and continue to have a leader like Alex with tremendous expertise and an even-larger mission-forward outlook. Alex’s vision and dedication have propelled St. John’s High School to new heights. His passion for educational excellence, coupled with his steadfast and deep commitment to the development of well-rounded young men, has had a profound impact on our students. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Alex for his outstanding leadership and wish him and his family continued success.” Patrick Slattery, executive director for Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools based in Baltimore, said, “Alex has been a tremendous mission-driven leader, always seeking to ensure our Xaverian charism and history is rooted in decision making and animated in the life of the school. He’s been a consummate professional in our Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School network. On behalf of the Xaverian Brothers and our network of schools, we thank Alex for his significant leadership over the past seven years.” The school's board of trustees will commence a nationwide search for a new head of school to continue the school’s tradition of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and service to others, the press release stated.
