Father Charles J. Dutram, 94, of Dudley and Ogunquit, Maine, passed away at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester, June 29. His funeral was held July 2 in St. Louis Church, Webster.
Born in Dudley, Aug. 13, 1923, he was the son of Clement and Mary (Lee) Dutram. Charles “Bud” Dutram graduated from St. Louis High school in 1940 and worked in the First National Bank until he was drafted into the service in 1943. He served with an Army Air Force radar unit in England, then landed with his unit on Omaha Beach in France three days after the American, British and Canadian troops had invaded. He served with the U.S. First Army across France and Germany, traveling almost to the Czech border before the war ended. He earned six battle stars, including one for the Battle of the Bulge.
After his discharge from the service he worked in civilian life for five years before beginning his studies for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary College in Emmitsburg, Md., from 1950 to 1952. He studied philosophy and theology at St. John Seminary, Brighton, from 1952 to 1958. He was ordained on Jan. 6, 1958, in St. Paul Cathedral by Bishop John J. Wright, and celebrated his 60th anniversary as a priest this year.
He was assigned as associate pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Clinton; St. Christopher and St. Margaret Mary parishes, Worcester; St. Boniface in Lunenburg; St. Patrick, Whitinsville, and St. Leo, Leominster.
On July 1, 1978, he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Leicester. On July 3, 1980, he was named pastor of St. Peter Parish, Northbridge. On May 31, 1985, he was appointed pastor of St. Bernadette Parish, Northborough. He retired from active ministry on June 28, 1991.
He enjoyed many years of retirement in Ogunquit, especially spending time with his grandnephew Thacher. He leaves a twin sister, Eileen M. Dutram of Dudley, and was predeceased by a brother Alexander; sisters Mary Dutram and Pearl Dutram and Muriel King.
He leaves nieces Mary Kosiba, Linda Cunningham, Nancy Cole, Eileen Parenteau and a nephew Charles King; grandnephews Sean and Nigel Cunningham, Thacher Parenteau, and grandniece Danielle Lusignan.
