Divine Mercy Parish in Blackstone and the town community, including the Parks and Recreation Department, celebrated and honored veterans on Sunday. The parish Fellowship Ministry provided a hot breakfast, children in the Religious Education program and the town schools hand-crafted thank you cards, posters, and placemats.
Grades 1-10 were involved in the preparation and were present to welcome the veterans and assist them, from helping them to their seats to bringing them their coffee and visiting with them. A display was made available for the guests to write the names of their fallen loved ones on paper hearts.
Father John L. Larochelle led those present in prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Roger Fontaine provided the music to “America the Beautiful” while the children led in song. State Representative, Michael Soter, said a few words and reminded everyone that Veterans Day is not one day but should be every day. He stated that he is committed to helping the veterans in any way he can. The Boy Scouts held a retirement of old U.S. flags at a flag burning.
“This event proved that when people work together, wonderful things can happen. We, at Divine Mercy Parish, are truly blessed to be able to work as one, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit,” said Deborah Campano, religious education coordinator.
