The distribution of Communion under both species, which had been suspended during the pandemic, may resume beginning Easter Sunday. The Office for Divine Worship announced that Bishop McManus has restored all liturgical practices that were suspended on May 18, 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among those was the distribution of the Precious Blood to the people. For nearly three years only the priest could receive from the Communion cup during Mass. The March edition of Orantes, a newsletter published by the office for worship, announced that the bishop has renewed “his permission to pastors to distribute Holy Communion under both species to the faithful, effective Easter Sunday, 2023.” “In light of the Church’s teaching that ‘Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it takes place under both kinds,’ pastors may choose to distribute Holy Communion under both species whenever they deem it appropriate,” Orantes announced. Pastors are to ensure that: 1. Due reverence is given to the Blessed Sacrament; 2. A sufficient number of well-trained ministers are provided for its distribution; 3. All extraordinary ministers have been duly approved by the bishop; 4. The rite would not be difficult to carry out on account of the number of participants; 5. The faithful have been well instructed on eucharistic belief and practice. The Office for Divine Worship also included several bulletin inserts for parishes “in order to provide basic catechesis to the faithful on the four areas of requisite formation required before the institution of Holy Communion under both species.” The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 281, teaches that “Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it takes place under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clearer expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord, as also the connection between the eucharistic banquet and the eschatological banquet in the Kingdom of the Father.”
