Today Catholic Charities Worcester County held a ribbon cutting and open house at its new family shelter at 4 Caroline St., Worcester, the former St. Stephen's Parish convent. The new shelter will accommodate families who are facing homelessness.
Mayday Morales, director of emergency services for Catholic Charities, spoke to attendees. Bishop McManus later blessed the renovated facility.
Since 1983, Catholic Charities' Youville House has provided temporary shelter for hundreds of local families in need while helping them to find, and teaching them how to maintain, safe and affordable housing. The new facility will offer more space.
The transitional shelter is for Massachusetts families who qualify – through the Department of Transitional Assistance – for emergency assistance. Homeless families receive the help they need to achieve stability, and they receive help in finding safe, affordable, permanent housing. The shelter helps residents accomplish both goals by providing them with education, counseling and service referrals.
Catholic Charities purchased the former convent in April for $235,000.
