Bishop to ordain 10 deacons May 31

WORCESTER – Bishop McManus is to ordain 10 men deacons at a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Paul Cathedral May 31.
All are welcome to attend the Mass and a public reception for all the newly ordained afterwards in the cenacle in the cathedral’s lower level. Helping with the reception are the diocesan Office for Vocations, Serra Club North and South, and the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Parish Council.
The Mass is to be broadcast on Charter TV 3 at 1 p.m. June 1 and 10 a.m. June 4.
Five of those being ordained are married men who are to serve the Diocese as permanent deacons.
The other five are to be ordained transitional deacons. They are preparing for priesthood, four of them for the Diocese, one for the Augustinians of the Assumption at Assumption College.
Transitional and permanent deacons assist in the celebration of Mass as ordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and by proclaiming the Gospel and preaching. They can assist at and bless marriages and preside over funerals and wake services, and are dedicated to various works of charity in living out their call to service.
Following are the biographies of the men being ordained.

Permanent deacons

Paul Connolly, son of the late James M. Connolly and Esther Connolly, was born May 6, 1968, in Norwood, Mass., and now lives in Oxford. His home parish is St. Roch’s.
He and his wife, Kerry (Pisani) Connolly, have a son, Patrick, 6.  Mr. Connolly studied at C.M. Callahan Elementary School, Norfolk County Agricultural School, Boston University and Anna Maria College. He is a field service specialist for Xerox Corporation. He previously worked for Hewlett Packard and American Medical Response.
He served in the United States Army at Fort Knox and at Fort Carson and achieved the rank of corporal.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving 11 a.m. June 1 at St. Roch’s, with a public reception following in the church hall.

Dominick Frank DeMartino, son of Dominick Paul DeMartino and the late Maria Monserrate (Linares) DeMartino, was born Sept.16, 1961 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and now lives in Brookfield. His home parish is St. Joseph’s in Charlton.
He and his wife, Linda Marie (Gobin) DeMartino have a daughter, Stephanie Marie DeMartino, 27, and a son, Michael Domenic DeMartino, 25, and a 3-year-old grandchild.
Mr. DeMartino attended Carmen Road Elementary School in Massapequa Park, N.Y. and Richland High School in Johnstown, Penn. He got his bachelor’s in physics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1983.
He is senior components engineer for Bose Corporation. His previous jobs were with Rockwell International, Honeywell Solid State Division, Sundstrand Aerospace, U.S. Robotics, IEC Electronics, and Hamilton Sundstrand.

Richard Alfred Menard III, son of Richard A. Menard Jr. and Diane Claire (Ashe) Robbins, was born Feb. 8, 1978, in Southbridge, and now lives in Sturbridge. His home parish is St. Joseph’s in Charlton.
He and his wife, Diane Lynn (Root) Menard, have three children:
Richard A. Menard IV, 9 1/2, Ashelyn Casey, 6 and Raymond Jeffrey Yale, 2.
Mr. Menard attended Heritage School in Charlton and Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley. He got his associate’s in criminal justice from Quinsigamond Community College in 1997 and his bachelor’s in criminal justice from Anna Maria College in 1999. He got his master’s in pastoral ministry from Anna Maria this year.
He is a lieutenant in the Becker College Police Dept., where he has worked for 13 years. Last week he received the Cabinet Award from Becker for commitment and service to the college.
He is Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Council 11379. He has served in baptism preparation and Lifeteen and been a eucharistic minister, lector and adult altar server at St. Joseph’s.

Peter Quy Nguyen, son of Vinh Quang Nguyen and Thuong Thi Phan, was born April 29, 1975 in Saigon, Vietnam, and now lives in Shrewsbury. His home parish is Our Lady of Vilna in Worcester.
He and his wife, June Dung Phan have three children:Teresa Phan Nguyen, 9; Alphonsus Phan Nguyen, 6, and Daniel Phan Nguyen, 3.
He attended elementary school in Hiep Phuoc, Vietnam, and high school in Long Thanh, Vietnam, and North High School in Worcester. He got his bachelor’s in mathematics and statistics in 2000 and his master’s in that field in 2002, both at UMass Amherst. He got his master’s in pastoral ministry from Anna Maria College this year.
He is a math teacher for Worcester public schools and a partner in a family restaurant in Worcester. He previously worked at UMass Amherst.
He is to assist at Masses of Thanksgiving at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. June 1 at Our Lady of Vilna, with a public reception in the church hall. He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 a.m. June 8 at St. Peter Parish in Worcester, with a public reception following in St. Peter’s Gym. On June 15 he is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 a.m.  at St. Phillip Parish in Grafton and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Parish in North Grafton, with a public reception following.

Quat Van Tran, son of the late Que Van Tran and Hong Thi Nguyen, was born Dec. 26, 1952, in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, and now lives in Shrewsbury.
His home parish is Our Lady of Vilna in Worcester.
He and his wife, Kim Van Tran, have three children: Henry Hoaivong Tran, 33; Bridgette Hoainha Tran, 21, and Christopher Hoaivu Tran, 13.
He studied at Lasan Kontum and Lasan Taberd schools in Vietnam and at Northeastern University, Worcester State College and UMass Amherst and got his teacher’s certification from the state of Massachusetts. He is working on his master’s in pastoral ministry at Anna Maria College.
He is retired from teaching in Worcester Public Schools but is still an interpreter and translator for them. He is a substitute teacher in Marlboro Public Schools.
He served in the military for Republic of South Vietnam from 1973 to 1975.
He has served on Our Lady of Vilna’s parish council for and is a member of the Cursillo movement, the Christian Life Community and Curia for the Worcester Legion of Mary.

Transitional deacons

Andrés Alberto Araque Castrillón, son of Alberto Araque and Stella Castrillón, was born February 5, 1984 in Medellin, Colombia.
He attended Instituto Jesus de la Buena Esperanza, Instituto Salesiano Pedro Justo  Berrio and Seminario Menor de Medellin. He got his licentiate in philosophy from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin in 2008.
He was director of religious education for two years at Santo Cura de Ars Parish.
He came to the United States 2008 to study for the priesthood for the Worcester Diocese. His education in the United States has been at Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies, Clark University and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, where he is to finish his master’s of divinity next spring.
His summer assignments were at the following parishes: St. Paul’s in Blackstone, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Gardner; St. Anne’s in Southborough, which he calls his home parish; St. Patrick’s, Whitinsville and Good Shepherd, Linwood. This summer he is serving at St. Anthony Parish in Dudley.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. June 1 at St. Anne Parish in Southborough. A public reception follows in the church hall.

Daniel Eduardo Moreno Jimenez, son of Libardo Moreno and Gladys Jimenez, was born Nov. 2, 1986, in the city of Medellin in the province of Antioquia.
He attended Escuela Playa Rica in Bello and Instituto Tecnico Industrial Pascual Bravo in Medellin. He got his canonical bachelor’s in philosophy from Pontifical University Bolivariana in 2008. He was in Seminario Conciliar de Medellin.
He worked for three years with deaf communities, signing the Mass for them and teaching.
He came to the United States in 2010 to study for the priesthood for the Worcester Diocese. His education in the United States has been at Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies, Clark University and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, where he is to finish his master’s of divinity next spring.
His summer assignments were at the following parishes: St. Joan of Arc Parish in Worcester, St. Louis, Webster, which he calls his home parish; St. Anthony, Dudley, and St. Anthony, Fitchburg. This summer he is serving at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Milford.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 5 p.m. May 31 at St. Louis.  A public reception follows in St. Louis Church hall.

Juan Sabastian Ramirez Acosta, son of Israel Ramirez and Carmen Acosta, was born Jan. 22, 1984 in Medellin, Colombia.
He attended Juan N. Cadavid Elementary School in Itagui and St. Elana High School Medellin. He got his canonical bachelor’s in philosophy from San Pio X Major Seminary in Istmina in 2008.
He came to the United States in 2009 to study for the priesthood for the Worcester Diocese. His education in the United States has been at Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies, Clark University and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, where he is to finish his master’s of divinity next spring.
His summer assignments were at St. Anthony of Padua, Fitchburg, which he calls his home parish, and St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester. This summer he is serving at St. Roch Parish in Oxford.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. June 1 at St. Anthony’s. A public reception follows in the church hall.

Stephen E. Lundrigan, son of the late Edward M. Lundrigan and Sandra T. Lundrigan, was born  Feb. 7, 1968 in Springfield, Mass.
He attended Brimfield Elementary School in Brimfield, Mass. and St. Mary Elementary and Marianhill Central Catholic High School, both in Southbridge. He got his bachelor’s in psychology from St. Anselm College in 1990 and his master’s in counseling psychology from Assumption College in 1994. He is to finish his master’s of divinity at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton next spring.
He did counseling in various places, including his own private practice, and taught in the psychology department at Worcester State University and Anna Maria College.
His home parish is Our Lady of the Angels in Worcester. This summer he is serving at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Fitchburg.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. June 1 at Our Lady of the Angels. A public reception is to follow in the new church hall.

Brother Ronald Sibugan, son of Alberto and Aida Sibugan, was born Oct. 6, 1978 in Pasay City in the Philippines, and brought up in Manila.
He attended Kasarinlan Elementary School in Caloocan City and Lakan Dula High School in Manila. He got his bachelor’s in computer engineering from Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila in 2000, and worked in that field  in the Philippines and Taiwan.
He was a missionary in Porac, Pampanga, teaching catechism, adult literacy and high school math and served in college ministry.
He met the Augustinians of the Assumption from Worcester in the Philippines, and came here in August 2004 to discern a vocation with them.
He got his bachelor’s in philosophy and did his first year of Theology at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. In 2012 he got his master’s of divinity and in 2013 his master’s in theology, with a concentration in spirituality and culture,  both from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
April 20, 2013, he made his final vows as an Assumptionist at Assumption College, where he is a campus minister.
He is to assist at Mass at 4:15 p.m. May 31 at St. John Parish in Worcester, with a public reception following. The Filipino Santa Cruzan and Flores de Mayo festival is beginning before Mass.
He is to assist at a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. June 1 in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Assumption College, with a public reception following in the adjoining Tinsley Campus Ministry Center.
