The trustees of Assumption College have authorized the establishment of a $3 million fund to provide additional financial aid for students whose families are facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release from the college. Returning and incoming students with a demonstrated financial need, as a result of loss of employment, furloughs, reduction in hours and other factors, are eligible to apply for assistance.
Through the Assumption Coronavirus Financial Aid Relief Fund, eligible families may apply for room grants up to $8,500 and tuition grants up to $10,000 for the 2020-2021 academic year. Students returning to Assumption in the fall, as well as students accepted for the Class of 2024, are eligible to apply for these need-based, one-time financial aid grants, the release states.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption to students and their families, in particular, with regard to their health and financial well-being,” said Assumption College President Francesco C. Cesareo. “The Assumption Coronavirus Financial Aid Relief Fund demonstrates our commitment to provide additional financial resources for students ... to pursue and achieve a college degree regardless of financial challenges during this unpredictable time,” he said.
Assumption will accept applications for assistance from this fund throughout the academic year, since some families may not realize the long-term impact of the current economic situation for several weeks or a few months.
Applications for financial assistance through the fund will consider the following as it relates to a student or an immediate family member:
• Lost a job or was furloughed;
• Reduction of hours; and
• Inability to work due to diagnosis of coronavirus or caring for someone with the virus.
According to the college, in early May the Office of Financial Aid will share with current students the details about applying for aid. Newly admitted students and transfers for the fall semester can apply at https://apply.assumption.edu/register/covid_relief.
