Sister Mary Daniel Malloy, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 24, at Mercy Center in Dallas, Pennsylvania, under the loving care of the Sisters of Mercy.
Born in Worcester on November 12, 1926, and baptized Catherine Ann, she was the daughter of Daniel F. and Emily (Dixon) Malloy. She completed her elementary education at Adams Square School and graduated from St. Peter High School, both in Worcester. After entering the Sisters of Mercy and taking the name Sister Mary Daniel, she received her bachelor’s degree from Anna Maria College, Paxton, and graduate degrees from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. and Assumption College in Worcester.
On April 26, 1945, Catherine Ann Malloy entered the Sisters of Mercy in Worcester, pronouncing first vows in the Chapel at Nazareth Home for Boys in Leicester, on July 1, 1947, and making her final vows there on July 1, 1950. A Sister of Mercy for 73 years, Sister Mary Daniel found great joy and fulfillment in bringing the mercy of God to all those whom she taught in elementary school at St. Paul School, Sacred Heart School, Blessed Sacrament School and at Marian High School, all in the Diocese of Worcester.
Sister was an extraordinarily gifted educator. She served as a teacher and counselor at Nazareth Home for Boys and was a special needs teacher and counselor for 20 years at Mercy Centre in Worcester. Sister Mary Daniel also ministered as the director of the Green Island Neighborhood Center in Worcester, utilizing her expertise in psychological counseling, while sharing her spirit of joy, and her love for children and for those who found themselves on the margins of society. For several years Sister served as a member of the Leadership Teams of the Sisters of Mercy, both in Worcester and in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
In 1990 Sister Mary Daniel began her 20 years of service as a psychologist in the Marriage Tribunal of the Diocese of Worcester, where she ministered until her retirement in 2016. At that time she chose to move to the Sisters of Mercy Healthcare Center at Mercy Center in Pennsylvania, where she remained until her death.
Sister Mary Daniel leaves her community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas; her sister, Mary L. Labuski, of Westborough; her brothers, Thomas M. Malloy and his wife Bernadette of East Granby, Conn., and John Malloy and his wife Yvonne of South Yarmouth; her nieces Ann Marie Kahn, Mary Theresa McAuliffe, Kathleen Dion, Christine Labuski, Catherine Malloy, Mary Beth Brotman, Theresa Malloy, Patricia Malloy, Margaret Malloy; her nephews Stephen Labuski, Daniel Labuski, Francis Labuski Jr., Christopher Malloy, Justin Malloy, John Malloy, Daniel Malloy, Timothy Malloy, Joseph Malloy and Michael Malloy and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Daniel Malloy, her brother-in-law, Francis Labuski, her close friend Sister Alice Petty, R.S.M., and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, with whom she shared her life and ministry for 73 years.
A wake for Sister Mary Daniel will be at Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester on Friday, June 29 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Leicester.
