WORCESTER – When David Tittle and Mark Lorusso discussed the pro-life movement in their men’s prayer group, they had no idea that they would someday combine their musical gifts and their faith to play a bigger role in that movement.
The seed for Musicians for Life was planted in 2017 when Mary Ann Harold asked Mr. Tittle and Mr. Lorusso to write a few pro-life songs. Ms. Harold, the owner of WQPH, a Catholic radio station, wanted them to perform at an event at Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church Hall in Fitchburg that featured anti-abortion activist Father Stephen Imbarrato.
Now consisting of Mr. Tittle, his wife, Susan Tittle, Mr. Lorusso, Frank Gallagher and Steve George, the pro-life musicians and singers have gone on to write and perform more songs. Musicians for Life’s music encourages people to choose to respect life at every stage from conception to natural death. The group has performed at various parishes in the Diocese of Worcester, and, in 2018, it released its first album, titled “It’s a Life.”
Not only has the group’s music touched the lives of others, it has made a difference in the lives of its members as well.
Mr. Tittle, a singer/songwriter, believes that the formation of the group is part of God’s plan, and he’s thankful to the people who gave them the encouragement they needed to make it happen.
“We’re blessed to have been surrounded by some pretty special guys and ladies who helped nudge and encourage us to write songs for a very difficult subject,” he said.
Fueled by faith and that fellowship, the group now strives to inspire others.
“We encourage everyone out there who is pro-life to help in some way to change hearts and minds of people considering abortion. Even the smallest effort can save the life of a child and the future of the mother from pain and regret,” he added.
Mrs. Tittle couldn’t agree more. On the album, she sings “I Can Rise,” a song about spiritual healing after an abortion. She said that she hopes, with God’s help, that the group can save as many lives as possible, and she hopes that the music can also have a positive impact on women who have had abortions.
“There are so many people suffering in our world from having an abortion, and they need to know that we have a loving God, and that he will forgive them and, hopefully, they can forgive themselves,” Mrs. Tittle shared. “I also believe that our country needs to understand what abortion is and what happens to their children, and that there are other options for them. There are so many couples that want to adopt....”
Mr. Lorusso, a singer and a guitarist, was so moved by one story that a young mother told him about her experience as a 16-year-old seeking an abortion that he was inspired to write a new song. He said that she told him that when she was on her way to an abortion clinic, a soldier told her that God loved her and that the baby wasn’t hers; he is God’s creation.
“She kept walking a few more steps … as she felt his words in her heart, turned around to say something to him, and he was gone,” Mr. Lorusso recalled of what the woman had told him. “She started asking the people that were nearby where the soldier went, and everyone she asked said they had not seen a soldier. She said he was her angel.”
Like the others, Mr. Gallagher is passionate about their music and their message. He plays guitar for the group, and he produced the album at Alpha Recording Studios, the Southbridge studio he owns and operates. When asked what he enjoys the most about being part of the group, he said, “For me it’s the joy and honor delivering and being part of the most important spiritual message of our time.”
“The abortion issue, the death penalty and euthanasia are all life issues that our government and society have taken away from the authority of God. These songs we sing, this pro-life movement, are born out of love for our fellow man, not hatred,” he said.
Through songs such as “Take Another Look,” a song written from the perspective of an unborn child who asks his mother to take another look at the sonogram, Mr. Tittle hopes that love will help raise awareness of the tragedy of abortion. He hopes that – in his lifetime – every Planned Parenthood will be replaced by an adoption center.
“Our goal has been to reach one heart and save one life,” Mr. Tittle shared.
