A celebration with seven Haitian students who are sponsored through the Worcester Diocesan Haitian Apostolate is to be held Sunday at St. Joseph Church, 35 Hamilton St., Worcester.
The celebration begins with the regular Haitian community Mass in French, Creole and English at 12:30 p.m., said Sister Marie-Judith Dupuy, the Sister of St. Anne who directs the apostolate.
A reception at which the students are to speak follows in the Msgr. Ducharme Social Center behind the church. It is to include Haitian food and information about the apostolate’s work. All are welcome.
The students’ benefactors and those interested in sponsoring students are especially encouraged to come meet them, she said.
This part of the celebration has been awhile in coming. The students were expected to be at a celebration/fundraiser, held Dec. 17 at Anna Maria College in Paxton. But they couldn’t get visas, Sister Judith said.
After much work on her part and the part of others, the students got their visas last week. They were to arrive yesterday and will leave Wednesday.
The celebration in December included a Mass, meal, music, dance and an award ceremony at which some benefactors were honored. Those present to receive their awards were Sister Joan Pollock, a Sister of St. Joseph, who sponsors eight students; Lucina Pietrowicz, Bishop McManus’ secretary, who has done much for her sponsored student, and the Laurence Family, donors to the program who sponsor several students.
Sister Judith said the St. Marie Province of the Sisters of St. Anne is collaborating with the Apostolate.
Sister Yvette Dargy, province co-leader, said this province encompasses the United States, is headquartered in Marlborough, and helps pay Apostolate salaries, which aids the education program.
