STAMFORD, CONN. - A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated March 17 in Holy Name of Jesus Church for Father Peter P. Hamernik, 85, former pastor of two parishes in the Diocese of Worcester who died March 14. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Darien. He is survived by a sister, Helen (Hamernik) Jamroga, a brother, Edward Hamernik, and several nieces and nephews. Father Hamernik was born March 12, 1927, in Stamford, the son of Florian and Rose (Smolen) Hamernik. He attended St. Mary’s High School, Orchard Lake, Mich, and St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, N.Y. He studied for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, and SS.Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake. He was ordained a priest May 10, 1956, by Bishop Wright in St. Paul Cathedral, Worcester. He served as associate pastor in three Worcester diocesan parishes; St. Mary’s, Uxbridge; St. Joseph’s, Webster, and Our Lady of Czestochowa, Worcester. He was named pastor of Holy Cross Parish, East Templeton on Dec. 15, 1977. On July 1, 1982, he was named pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish, West Warren. He was named a senior priest on Feb, 11, 1994, and continued to serve at St. Stanislaus.
