Father Carey funeral on Saturday

Bishop McManus will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephen Church for Father Richard T. Carey, 76, who died Monday. A visitation and wake will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.
Father Carey  was born Aug. 15, 1939, in Worcester, the son of John F. and Jane (Thomas) Carey. He graduated in 1957 from St. Peter High School.
He studied for the priesthood from 1957 to 1959 at Cardinal O’Connell Minor Seminary, Jamaica Plain and, from 1959 to 1965, at St. John Seminary, Brighton, where he received a master of divinity degree.
He also is a graduate of the Notre Dame Clergy Institute, South Bend, Ind., and received a master’s degree in counseling from Anna Maria College in Paxton.
He was ordained a priest on Feb. 13, 1965, by Bishop Flanagan in St. Paul Cathedral.
He was associate pastor at St. Stephen Parish, Worcester; Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Gardner; St. Richard Parish, Kingston, Jamaica, British West Indies, St. Paul Cathedral Parish, Worcester, and St. Louis Parish Webster.
In January 1966, he was appointed the first  chaplain of the diocesan Christian Family Movement
On Feb. 1, 1983, he was named pastor of Prince of Peace Parish, Princeton, where he served until April 10, 1987. when he was named pastor of St. Peter Parish, Worcester.
Then, on June 30, 1989, he was named pastor of St. Joseph Parish, North Brookfield, where he served until he retired on July 1, 2010.
He was predeceased by his brother, John F. Carey Jr. of Calif. and his sister, Mary Jane Kolarik of South Carolina.  He  leaves his loving and adoring “baby sister” Patricia A. Carey of North Oxford, who will miss him very much, and many cousins and their families.
