WORCESTER – Vietnamese New Year was celebrated at Our Lady of Vilna Church Feb. 7 with the Christianizing of some Vietnamese traditions. Bishop McManus has his picture taken with worshippers outside the church. Clergy genuflect before the altar as parishioners in native dress carry incense sticks for them to offer to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Bishop McManus reads the Scripture on an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which he chose from a decorated tree. The Scripture says: “Now that I am old and gray, God, do not forsake me.” (Ps. 71:18) Worshippers were invited to take the cards and consider the Scriptures on them as God’s message to them for the new year. Enjoying the moment with the bishop are Deacon Van X. Nguyen and Father Tam M. Bui, pastor. Lions doing the lion dance first bow to the altar, to show respect for God, and to the bishop, to show respect for him.
