Vatican diplomat tells WYD pilgrims Spirit guides them to God

By Dan McAloon

SYDNEY, Australia (CNS) — The Vatican’s ambassador to Egypt told World Youth Day pilgrims that the Holy Spirit will guide them in their relationship with God and stick with them when they leave the international youth festival.

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald told New Zealand and Pakistani youths gathered in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church in southern Sydney July 16 that the Holy Spirit “confirms the Christian’s special relationship with God.”

“It is the Spirit that helps us to relate to the Father and Son, and it is the Spirit that allows us to pray,” said the archbishop during the talk. full story...

Bishop sends youth to Australia

WHITINSVILLE – “To be a Christian is to be a person on a mission,” Bishop McManus told 10 Worcester Diocesan pilgrims headed for World Youth Day in Australia, and their supporters.

“This is not a trip,” he said, preaching at the send-off Mass at Oakhurst Retreat and Conference Center Friday. “It’s certainly not a vacation. It is a pilgrimage.”

At the end of Mass Bishop McManus blessed group leader Thomas Small and presented him with a crucifix to take and bring back for the diocesan Youth Day in October.full story...

Spiritually stronger

By Tanya Connor

WORCESTER – “Since that horrible Sunday in May it’s felt like we’ve been in limbo, not belonging anywhere. Today I’m not crying. I’m happy. I’m home. I’ve joined.”

Susan Jonielunas, formerly of St. Casimir Parish, was sharing her feelings Sunday after the welcoming Mass at St. John Parish, with which the Lithuanian parish was merged July 1. The announcement of this and other mergers, made in May, saddened many people in the affected parishes. But there was happiness Sunday as they were welcomed to – or did the welcoming at – the Mother Church of the Diocese. full story...

By Dennis Sadowski

WASHINGTON (CNS) — The Catholic Worker Movement has called on the U.S. bishops to denounce the American-led war on terror while urging the church and U.S. citizens to repent for “our affronts to God” fed by violence and materialism.
